Book Club

I have just had the privilege of joining a Book Club...a Brand New Book Club!! We started it 2 months ago and our first book was The Glass Castle: A Memoir by Jeannette Walls. Great book, we had a wonderful discussion on the book. Our rule is that we have to talk about the book for at least 30 minutes! and I am sure we spent way more than that on the book. The second book we read was Middlesex: A Novel (Oprah's Book Club) by Jeffrey Eugenides. Unfortunately, I didn't finish the book before our scheduled meeting, but I am just now finishing it. It was another fantastic book. I really wish I would have finished the book before our meeting. I would have liked to participate in the discussion more. The book is about a hermophodite, a child with ambiguous genetalia. He is actually a boy, raised as a girl, finds out he is a boy when he is 14. Very interesting. I highly recommend the book. Our next book we are reading is Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt. We aren't meeting again until January, so I have plenty of time to finish the book.

So...a bit about The Book Club. We are 7 women strong, we all know each other from our children's school. Our meetings are very social...with good eats and drinks. We have made a pact to talk about the book for AT LEAST 30 minutes....our Book Club Nights last for at least 3 hours. We talk, and talk, and talk...it is wonderful. There is something magical about getting together with a group of women and talking for hours. We talked about the city politics (which is very exciting right now in our small town), our children, being a Mom, the things no one told us about when we became Moms, etc. Last week we laughed so hard about taking our children to Church. We go there for peace, calm, serenity....and end up with our blood pressure soaring, praying for help so we don't harm our children, not listening or paying attention at all because we are so busy telling our children to be quiet, sit still...on and on I could go. Our Church does give us frazzled moms a break every other week by taking our darling children out for Children's Liturgy. You hear a collective sigh of relief from all the parents as our darling little angels meekly file out of Church. During the next 20 or so minutes you can almost hear all the moms silently praying that when their little angels return they have somehow metamorphed into perfectly behaved children. Then reality hits, the darling little angels run back into Church and all the moms think to themselves "Why do I do this to myself week after week after week?".....

How did this post start out as a Book Club post and metamorph into a Church post??
