Our wonderful hostess this week is Irish Coffeehouse and here is her assignment:
Careers- Then and Now
THEN: As a child day dreaming of what your future would hold for you, what did you want to be when you grew up? Did you ever pursue or achieve it?
NOW: If you could be trained and placed in any career beginning tomorrow, what would it be?
This is going to be a fun assignment, I can't wait to read everyone's....
As a child I wanted to be a veterinarian, what little girl doesn't? I also had dreams of being an archaeologist or an anthropologist. I am still very interested in different cultures, both ancient and modern day.
Now, I am very happy with my life and I feel so blessed that I can say that. I work part time as a Dental Hygienist and full time as a wife and mother. I feel that I have the best of both worlds....I get to visit with adults all day, albeit one way conversations, and I am home with my children the majority of the week. A regular paycheck, mom time, and adult time!!
With that being said...I thought about this assignment all week. What would I do, if I could do anything? I love learning and going to school, I could that full time. I also love gardening and would love to do landscape design. I also love party/event planning. We are having a wedding reception at our house in two weeks for our cousin and I am thoroughly enjoying the planning process. I have also planned and implemented incredible parties for my children. I really enjoy it.
So there you have it...my careers past, present, and future.....Now head on over to the Irish Coffeehouse and have a cup of joe and a pastry and read all the other careers.

I really enjoy event planning, too! It's stressful and tiring and sometimes a total PITA, but I really do enjoy it!!
I used to want to be a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader and a "lady who worked in a bar"! Things have changed, dramatically!
So many people today wanted to be vets! I wonder if I shall find one who actually became one! LOL!
I love that you say you are a full time mom as well! Our generation seems to be the one that is supposed to go and and have a career whether we want it or not!
While I admire women who can do both I also admire those who choose to stay home and raise their children. That in itself is a wonderful career!
To have a job that give you parental time,a paycheck, and leisure time is more than a dream. You are lucky to have that. Now event planning sounds like that would be a fun thing to do,and get paid for.
It may not have been what you started out dreaming of, but it does sound like you wound up with your dream life!
Landscape design! Wow....now that would be a career with big bucks coming in...just think of it, Hollywood...Justin Timberlake having a home built...with a huge amount of land...and you are there, laying out the terrain! Ya, I can picture this!!!
I see mega millions in your future!!
Come by if you can find time. Have a super-duper Monday.
I think that party planning would be a great job - my youth group just hosted a summer ball and I did most of the planning and organising for it and then a group of four of us made all the canapes, was so much fun!
It's lovely that you're blessed with a job and a family and that you seem really happy with the balance of both.
Thanks for the great FM post :)
My hubby thinks I am strange because I told him I could make going to school my career! I love learning. Which is why I probably became a teacher!
I could not be a party planner. I hate people too much! ;0p
You do have the best of both worlds!
Now party planning? That sounds like fun, FUN, F-U-N!!!
I wanted to be a wife and mother. Not very enlightened, but there you are. Fortunately, at age 22 I married my high school sweetheart and we proceeded to produce 3 beautiful sons in 3 and a half years.
I've had a long career at our DOT, but the job I've cherished and loved is that of wife and mother.

Party planning is something I considered doing at one time. I love doing all the decorating!
Party planning sounds a really enjoyable job and would allow you to be very creative!
How fun to read about everyone’s ‘early dreams’ … paths … and possible futures! I wouldn’t want to do any of the things you listed, but I’m delighted you do because I would certainly value these as ‘services’ available to me. I visited earlier but had problems with Blogger and couldn’t comment. Hopefully all seems well now and mine’s up finally at Small Reflections.
Hugs and blessings,
Did you not post about a shower that you planned for a family member recently, Alison? If so, go for the event planning! I remember this table setting being very lovely with pretty food and herby decorations. Agree about the landscape design--what great fun it would be to help people make lovely gardens to escape to.
I think event planning would be major fun...as long as you didn't have to deal with a Bridezilla!
I'd love to be a party planner, so much fun getting to see everything come together!
Terrific post, Allison.
What a terrific job you have - and I loved your comment about your adult "one-way" conversations...lol.
Sounds like you have the best of both worlds - event planner, so much fun but lots of work, but so is being a Mommy - you can do it!
I guess wanting to be a veterinarian was a more common career goal than I realized! Going to school full time seems to be another one.
And yes, you do have the best of both worlds now!
ohhh yeah! Archeology and Anthropology are another 2 I was interested in as a child. Again with the dirt! ;)
You'd like to go to school full time? Awww man, I'm shivering at just the thought of that!
Anyone that works in the dental hygiene field scares me... :)
I would love to learn how to do landscape design. :D
The best part of your job sounds like the one-way conversation, imo. :)
I don't think I could do very well at planning parties but I would love to coordinate the house building process. :)
As long as you are happy with your "lot" you have won.
I also imagine that you never have to buy toothbrushes. Or floss.
A lot of folks wanted to be vets when they were younger. Fun!
you indeed have the best of both worlds, nice post
